On a sparkling ice shelf at the bottom of the world lived Pippa, a penguin with bright eyes and a cheerful waddle. Pippa always said “please” and “thank you.” She held doors—well, ice tunnels—open for others. She waited her turn. She smiled even on windy mornings.
Some friends thought manners were silly. “Why waste words?” asked a grumpy penguin named Gorp. “Fish is fish. Fast is best.”
Pippa shook her head kindly. “Manners are not a waste,” she said. “They are magic that makes cold places feel warm.”
One morning, the fish line was long and noisy. Penguins pushed and squawked. Flippers flapped. Someone slipped on the ice. Gorp shoved his way toward the front. Pippa waited her turn and smiled at the seal who handed out fish.
“Good morning,” Pippa said. “May I please have one fish?”
The seal beamed. “Of course! Thank you for asking so nicely.” He gave Pippa an extra shiny fish. Soon other penguins noticed. They tried Pippa’s way. “Please” and “thank you” traveled down the line like a happy song. The pushing stopped. The line became calm and cheerful.
Later that day, a lost chick stood crying near a crack in the ice. “I cannot find my family,” the chick sobbed. Pippa knelt—well, she bent her little knees—and listened carefully.
“We will find them,” Pippa promised. She asked a whale for directions. “Excuse me,” she called politely, “could you point the way to the south nesting rocks?”
The whale was delighted to be asked so kindly. He pointed with a great gentle splash. Pippa and the chick followed the path, greeting every animal they met with warm words. A snow petrel gave them a shortcut. A friendly seal offered a ride across a smooth stretch of ice.
At last they found the chick’s family. There were hugs and happy peeps. The chick’s mother thanked Pippa again and again. “Your kindness brought our baby home,” she said.
By sunset, the whole colony was using gentle words. Even Gorp mumbled a quiet “thank you” when someone passed him a fish. Pippa waddled home under the pink polar sky, knowing politeness is a gift anyone can give.
That night, as the stars sparkled on the ice, Pippa whispered to the wind, “Please keep my friends safe. Thank you for this beautiful day.” And somewhere in the dark, the wind seemed to whisper back, “You’re welcome.”
