Ava and Ben wanted an adventure. They had read books about explorers, maps, and secret treasures. One Saturday morning, Mom gave them a paper, two pencils, and a challenge. “Find letters outside, from A to Z,” she said. “Write each one down when you find it. The backyard is your map.”
Off they ran, sneakers thumping on the grass. Ava held the paper. Ben held the pencil. The sun was warm, and the air smelled like flowers.
A was for apple on the tree. B was for bird on the fence. C was for cloud shaped like a cat. They giggled and wrote each letter carefully. D was for dog next door, who barked a friendly hello. E was for egg in a robin’s nest, high and safe. F was for flower, bright and yellow. G was for grass under their feet.
Letter by letter, the world became a living book. H was for hose by the garden. I was for insect on a leaf. J was for jar Mom used for lemonade. K was for kite stuck in the low branches—Ben climbed carefully and freed it. L was for leaf, M for mud puddle, N for nest, O for orange flower pot.
They paused for a snack of crackers and juice. “Are we really going to find all twenty-six?” Ben asked.
“Explorers do not give up,” Ava said.
P was for pinecone. Q was tricky until they found a quilt drying on the line. R was for rock, S for snail, T for tree, U for umbrella Mom brought when clouds gathered. V was for vine on the fence. W was for worm after the short rain. X was the hardest—until Ben noticed the wooden toy box with a big X sticker on the lid.
Y was for yellow butterfly. Z was for zipper on Ben’s jacket. When they wrote the final letter, they cheered so loudly that Mom came to the door, smiling.
That night they read their list aloud from A to Z. Ava said, “Learning is an adventure.” Ben agreed, already planning tomorrow’s number hunt. Mom hung their alphabet paper on the fridge like a treasure map.
And every time Ava and Ben looked outside after that, they saw more than a yard. They saw letters, stories, and endless reasons to explore.
